Monto is a rural community based on a variety of primary
production such as dairying, grazing, cropping and pig farming. Of recent
years, local producers have diversified into alpacas, goats, horticultural
products for export and olive growing. It is a community which has been
required to diversify to ensure economic sustainability.
Monto State High School is a small stand-alone high school
with students travelling from five primary schools in the area including a
non-state school.
The school is situated in the second largest area of school
grounds in Queensland. It has an extensive farm for the agricultural section,
growing crops and raising cattle. There
is a full size oval, indoor sports hall with basketball, netball and volleyball
courts, access to tennis courts and other sports facilities. Other facilities
include a resource centre, computer labs and computers with internet access in
every general classroom.
The school has an extensive range of curriculum offerings,
with growing flexibility for students in the senior phase of learning.
TAFE link courses, school-based traineeships, structured
work placements and alternative programs for students all contribute to a
diverse and futures orientated approach to schooling.
We have a Special Education Program to service our school
community. Our experienced staff work closely with students, staff and parents
to build learning opportunities for all students.
Monto State High School is an excellent school with an
outstanding academic, cultural and sporting achievement record and strong
community support.
In 2018, our Annual Improvement Plan priorities are Writing
and Curriculum.
Writing improvement is a priority area for our students, in
particular our mid-upper group of students. As a whole school, we are focusing
on improving:
- Vocabulary
(spelling and definitions)
- Punctuation
(using a variety of types)
- Sentence
Structure (using compound and complex sentences)
Our mid-level to upper level students are also working on
individual goals to improve their writing. We will continue to embed our
literacy strategies to ensure 100% of students meet national minimum standards.
Our Curriculum focus involves a review of our whole school
curriculum plan, subject offerings and preparation for the new QCE system in
2019. Our curriculum units for Year 7-10 will be adapted to ensure full
implementation of the Australian Curriculum for 2020. We are also reviewing
assessment and moderation processes within the school to ensure whole school alignment
with our new systems.
Our Investing for Success funding is being utilised to
support improvement in Writing and Numeracy. It will also support collegial
coaching and professional development to improve differentiation, pedagogical
practice and data literacy in the areas of Writing and Numeracy.
